The first Avenger is back in the latest release from Marvel studios, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now working for SHIELD, Cap continues to struggle with finding himself a man out of his own time. He's got much bigger concerns though, namely the titular assassin, a mysterious figure who has terrorised America and her allies since the Cold War.

The first Captain America film made the most of it's period setting to distinguish it from the rest of the Marvel flicks. It gave it an enjoyably old-school atmosphere, feeling like a classic boy's-own-adventure type yarn. With the end of the movie (spoilers) bringing him into the present day any sequel was always going to have to take a somewhat different approach. With Winter Soldier they decided to go down the spy thriller route, and the end result somewhat resembles a Bond movie with Super-powers (with a dash of Bourne for good measure). Much as every Bond film starts with a pre-credits action scene, Winter Soldier kicks off with a thrilling first-reel action sequence involving a rescue mission on a ship hijacked by pirates. The action is exciting and well choreographed throughout, keeping up the high standard seen in most Marvel productions to date. A lot of the action is surprisingly down-to-earth too, with plenty of old fashioned hand-to-hand combat and gunplay inbetween the comic-book super-soldier smackdowns. That's not to say there's not plenty of the completely fantasy-based stuff in the mix too, but this is certainly closer to the likes of Iron Man 3 than The Thor movies. The action is expertly mounted, and there's much less of a reliance on CGI than in many of it's predecessors.

Chris Evans is completely home in the lead role by now, portraying the boy-scout role convincingly, without being bland. This is as much a SHIELD movie as a Captain America movie though, and several familiar faces take much meatier roles than we've seen them in before. Samuel L Jackson is always reliably excellent as Nick Fury, but here for the first time he's more of an actual character than a leather jacket and an eye-patch. Scarlett Johanson's Black Widow plays her biggest part to date, essentially playing the second lead. She's believably bad-ass and more than hold her own against the big guy himself, and her playful interplay with Evans is a lot of fun. Perhaps inevitably this means that the newcomers have less to do, with Emily VanCamp getting a particularly insubstantial role. Robert Redford is reliably solid as a SHIELD big-shot, but doesn't stand out as especially memorable.

Marvel movies have generally struggled to create memorable villains- Loki aside- and it's no different here. The Winter Soldier himself has little to make him stand out, and the big revelation about his identity doesn’t really have the emotional wallop it's intended to.

Any complaints are relatively minor though, and when you're actually watching it, you'll be too entertained to care. There's never a dull moment and it grips from the off. It delivers everything that you've come to expect from a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, while adding a few surprises along the way. The character of Captain America always has the potential to lend itself to flag-waving jingoistic nonsense that won't play well outside the States, but they've ably sidestepped it here. The Winter Soldier might not quite manage to reach the gold standard for Marvel movies that is The Avengers but it's not all that far off. An unabashedly fun time at the movies.

+Great action, humour and dramatic twists and turns
-Weak villains and not much for the new characters to do

To mark the occasion, here is the very first article, which has never been published online before, and can only be found in print if you can track down a back issue of MyM #1 (good luck with that!)
This article first appeared in MyM Magazine Issue 1 (May 2012)

Tite Kubo's Bleach is unquestionably one of the most successful anime and manga franchises of the last decade or so. Since it began publication in 2001 in Weekly Shonen Jump it has racked up more than fifty volumes of manga, in excess of three hundred episodes of the anime, a mountain of merchandise and numerous videogames. It has even spawned a rock musical and there is a live-action Hollywood adaptation in the pipe-line.

In case you've been living under a rock, Bleach follows the exploits of Ichigo Kurosaki, a Japanese high-schooler with a sixth-sense style ability to see dead people. While most kids his age are happy with a paper round or working in a local shop, Ichigo has a most unusual part-time job ; substitute Soul Reaper (Shinigami or Death God in the original Japanese).

The anime TV series first began airing in October 2004, with the last episode airing on March 27th 2012. As with most long-running anime it has also involved a number of feature-length releases, with four having hit the big screen in Japan to date. This May sees the first three movies make their UK high-definition debut, when they are released on Blu-ray for the first time.

Bleach's first theatrical outing Memories Of Nobody hit Japanese cinemas in December 2006. As with the films that would follow, it was directed by Noriyuki Abe (who also directed the series) and featured original characters designed by Tite Kubo himself. The movie introduced the concept of Blanks, souls who have lost their memories and are unable to pass on. Their sudden appearance in the land of the living seems to be connected with a new enemy who threatens to destroy both the world of the living and the Soul Society (Bleach's realm of the dead). The events also seem to be linked to the sudden arrival of a young Soul Reaper named Senna.

The following December saw the release of the second film The Diamond Dust Rebellion. It revolves around the stealing of a precious artefact known as The Kings Seal, an event in which diminutive Soul Reaper Captain Toshiro appears to be implicated. The division captain is charged with treason, leaving Ichigo to try and fight and clear his name.

The third feature, Fade to Black was released in December 2008, and is being released in the UK for the first time. The inhabitants of the Soul Society are attacked by a mysterious foe who kidnaps Rukia. The attack leaves the Soul Reapers stricken with amnesia that causes them to forget not only Rukia but Ichigo as well. Ichigo must try and rescue her and restore her memories, in a quest that will bring him into conflict with not only the kidnappers, but also his friends in the Soul Society.

If you're completely new to the world of Bleach and think the movies would be a good jumping-in point then think again. These are aimed very specifically at pre-existing fans and there is no allowances for the uninitiated. For those fans though, these movies provide just about everything they could want from a Bleach movie. They are essentially extended episodes of the TV series, but the animation quality is slightly slicker. The action set-pieces feel suitably cinematic and epic, making the most of a higher budget and longer running time. The kick-ass action Bleach excels at is here in abundance, surrounded by compelling drama and some big laughs. All in all, any Bleach fan worth their salt needs these films in their collection. And with the gorgeous new Blu-ray transfer, Bleach has never looked (or sounded) better.
In fact, I reckon it's probably overdue it had a full-on makeover. In the meantime though, I'm checking in to remind you that I'm alive and have been writing the whole time (even if I've been neglecting this blog terribly).

AFA goes from strength to strength, and right now the majority of my time is going in to that.
I've continued to write from MyM as well, with my most recent contribution being a review of Maid Sama in issue 46. Out now in your local magazine stockist or the app store on iOS or Android.
Issue number 38 of MyM Magazine is now available in good magazine stockist- or for that matter bad magazine stockists, as well as on iOS and Android. The new issue marks the magazine's third anniversary. Not coincidentally, that means it also marks my third anniversary as a professional writer, with my article on the Bleach movies appearing in that very first issue. Fast forward to now, and you'll find my review of Nadia: Secret of Blue Water in the latest issue.

I've missed a handful of issues, but I've proud to have written for almost every edition of the magazine. I've enjoyed every minute and I'm hugely lucky to get the chance to write for it. If my teen self knew I'd one day get paid to write about anime, he'd probably forgive me for not being married to Sarah Michelle Gellar. Probably.

I've also landed another online gig that I look forward to sharing with you soon. In the meantime I've been (as always) writing for AFA, which has taken most of my work time not taken up by those other two gigs. I've recently been republishing my work originally done for JapanCinema over there too- with three reviews republished there so far. It strikes me that this blog is way overdue a makeover but until then you can keep up with all my writing via twitter.Chris Perkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10178848467568403800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3089898284312812349.post-34894971208360356142015-05-04T19:31:00.002+01:002015-05-18T11:25:35.486+01:00An important Statement on 'Japan Cinema'.Over the past few years I've contributed reviews and articles on an irregular basis for the website Japan Cinema (no link here, for reasons that are about to become obvious). I will not be doing so any more. It's come to my attention that the owner of the site has been guilty of some pretty heavy-duty plagiarism, over an extended period. I and several other contributors submitted our original work to the site in good faith, only to be posted alongside articles and reviews that have been stolen in whole or in part from other sites. and writers.

I was hoping it was a misunderstanding or something, but I've seen the evidence and it's pretty damning, sad to say.

It's nothing short of theft. As a writer, it hurts me to think any other writer's work has been stolen in this way. And on a more personal level it's also very disappointing, as I thought the editor was a genuine guy. In respect of that I'm choosing not to call him out by name. But I'm very saddened by this turn of events- not to mention angry.

I will not write for the site ever again (if it even survives this) and do not wish to be associated with it in any manner. I'd advise of any you to steer well clear as well.

In short: this sucks.

[UPDATE] The site has now been taken down (although the editor is still not taking full responsibility for his actions. Another former writer made this video on the subject, and the editor's behaviour.Chris Perkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10178848467568403800noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3089898284312812349.post-88604719692710249992015-04-23T19:36:00.000+01:002015-04-23T19:36:04.850+01:00Throwback Thursday: Avengers Assemble (2012)Seeing as the sequel Avengers: Age Of Ultron is out in UK cinemas today (!), and it's also (Throwback) Thursday, I thought I'd take the opportunity to republish my review of the first film. This was originally published on the now defunct Screen Highway, and was the only article I wrote for that site that hasn't been republished on AFA (as it's the only non animation article I wrote for SH). Since the X-men and Spider-man
films hit it big and the box office in the early years of this young
century, super heroes have ruled the box-office. Sure there has been
a fair few misfires but they have been more than made up for by the
colossal success of the hits. It's no wonder that Marvel grew tired
of watching other companies make bank off their own creations and
decided to make a go of it as a movie studio in their own right. Even
with Spidey, Wolverine and chums tied up at Sony and Fox respectively
Marvel still has an impressive stable of characters to play with.
Starting with Iron Man in 2008 they have attempted to do something
never attempted in film before, and create and create multiple film
franchises that occur in a single on-screen universe. Avengers
is the culmination of this plan, bringing together characters
established in the previous five films released by the studio.

The action kicks off when the Asgardian
Loki (last seen as the villain in last summer's Thor) arrives
on Earth, looking for the mysterious Cosmic Cube. Nick Fury (Samuel L
Jackson) must call on the help of Tony Stark (a.k.a. Iron Man),
Loki's adopted brother Thor, the newly defrosted Captain America and
the Incredible Hulk, when Loki threatens the earth.

Although such a team-up has never been
attempted before, the odds of this working did not look good.
Previously comic-book movies that have tried to cram too much in have
resulted in the likes of Batman and Robin and Spider-man 3.
Trying to introduce too many characters has resulted in the films
coming unstuck, so how on earth can a film with that many heroes
work? Luckily it seems Marvel knew what they were doing. Gradually
introducing the cast over several films has freed them for the need
for origin stories (the downfall of many super hero flicks), and able
to concentrate on the plot, and bringing the characters together. The
Marvel films and characters have all felt distinct and individual so
there was a big question mark over how well the characters would
mesh. Thanks to a number of smart decisions on Marvel's part, it all
comes together better than you could possibly have hoped.

The first right-step was in casting.
Setting the tone by casting Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark, they have
(ahem) assembled a line-up of strong actors who have had the time to
get comfortable in their roles. The cast is universally excellent,
without a weak link in the chain. It's not hard to see that everyone
involved is having the time of their lives. Downey Jr gives great
snark as Stark, with brilliant barbed one-liners aimed at his
cohorts. Chris Evans brings real heart to the stoic Captain America,
and Chris Hemsworth makes up in screen presence what he lacks in
convincing accent as the mighty Thor. Some of the other performances
are more surprising however- Tom Hiddleston brings gleeful menace to
the villainous Loki, becoming infinitely more memorable than he was
in last summer's Thor movie.
Scarlett Johanssen's Black Widow was underwhelming in Iron
Man 2, but
more than holds her own here. The stand-out here though is new-comer
Mark Ruffalo, who takes over the role of Bruce Banner (the Incredible
Hulk) and makes it his own. Both as Banner and (via performance
capture) as Hulk, he's responsible for several of the best
crowd-pleaser moments, and is an inspired addition to the cast.

The second master-stroke was in Hiring
geek-god Joss Whedon to direct. Whedon cut his teeth on TV cult-hits
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly and is comfortable
with ensembles. It also helps more than a little that he is a
lifetime comic-book aficionado who has written a few comics in his
time to boot. He clearly has a great deal of affection for these
characters and the universe that really shines through. The way the
characters react to each other (whether hitting it off or bickering)
is the film's greatest pleasure. The dialogue is typically smart (as
in any Whedeon production) and has more genuine laughs in than many
comedies.

Whedon is well known for his
intelligent writing, but this is a big summer blockbuster, so action
set pieces are a must. Having only directed one feature before,
doubts were raised if Whedon could handle the massive high-stakes
action that this film required. There's no need to worry though, as
Avengers boasts some of the most thrilling sequences seen in a
blockbuster to date. The action is as explosive and exciting as you'd
hope, and Michael Bay could learn a thing of two about creating
set-pieces where you can actually tell what's going on.

Negative reviews of the likes of
Transformers are often dismissed by fans as taking it too
seriously. After all, they argue, it's just 'check your brain at the
door' type entertainment. The
Avengers shows that it doesn't need to be that way,
popcorn entertainment and well written need not be mutually
exclusive. Whizz-bang action scenes are all well and good but when
it's involving characters you actually care about, it makes all the
difference.

Any problems with the film are only
really minor niggles. It takes a little while to get going,
concentrating on the non super-powered SHIELD agents first. While at
the time you may be itching to get the costumed heroes on screen as
quickly as possible, in retrospect you can understand why doing it
that way was necessary- and once it does get going it never lets up.
Some grumbles have been made about the beefy running time, but
there's an awful lot to fit in, and it actually leaves you hungry for
more.

This is very definitely aimed at fans
of the characters who will be familiar with their back-stories. As
a result if you have missed any (or all) of the preceding films (or
are otherwise not up to speed with your Marvel lore) then you won't
have quite the same experience. Yet it's not completely inaccessible
to newcomers, as you learn everything you need to know from what’s
shown in this film alone. Besides it works simply as a spectacular
summer movie in it's own right.

This is simply an astounding
achievement, and it works better than any fan could possibly have
hoped. Whether you grew up on the comics, or if you have just enjoyed
the movies over the past four years, this is the prefect culmination
of what Marvel studios set out to do. It stands out as easily one of
the best Super Hero movies to date, alongside The Dark Knight.
As the opening shot of the Summer movie season the bar has been set
incredibly high. Your move, Nolan.

Issue number 32 of MCM Expo Group's MyM is now available and features a review from me on Dragonball Z: Battle Of Gods and One Piece Collection 8. I also contributed to the 'Best of 2014' feature. What about the last 2 issues you may ask? I did feature in both, but I only had a half page review in each, so they weren't really worth a post of their own.

In other news, check out the first part of a new series of articles called Manga Live over on Japan Cinema. More parts coming soon! I've continued to write on 3D printing for the Bodastone blog too. Bonus Stage has returned to NerdSpan after a 3 month break so be sure to check it out.

Meanwhile my (not so) new site Animation For Adults has been continuing to grow and there's plenty of stuff for you to read there if you haven't been keeping up. Next month will see the site's first anniversary, and I'm pretty pleased with how it's been going so far. See you soon!Chris Perkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10178848467568403800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3089898284312812349.post-4961672276309069712014-08-31T14:05:00.000+01:002014-08-31T14:05:57.184+01:00August Update: MyM #29, Two Clones #1 and a New Blogging Gig.

This month saw the release of issue number 29 of MyM, which features more contributions from me. This time around I've got two reviews- One Piece and Dragonball. Not only that but I've got a feature on the A-Z of the Dragonball franchise. That article was written months back, but promptly got bumped and I've been waiting for it to get in ever since. So I'm pretty pleased to finally be able to share it.

I've also contributed a short piece to an exciting new digital magazine named Two Clones. It features a lot of really interesting geek-focused stuff from some really talented writers, some of whom I've had the pleasure of knowing for a while. My piece is on the Hayao Miyazaki film Castle of Cagliostro.

I've also got a new blogging gig! I'm writing about the 3D printing and 3D Scanning industry, which is pretty new for me. It's an exciting challenge, and outside my usual area so I've been enjoying it so far. You can check out my stuff at Bodastone.
After last month's disappointing no-show, I'm pleased to report I'm back in the current issue of MyM (number 28) which you'll find in all good newsagents,(and probably some crap ones) as well at the App Store. My reviews are for Naruto Shippuden and Dragon Ball volume 2, so look out for it! Last month most of my online efforts were spent on continuing to write for my new blog AFA- so make sure you check it out, if you're an animation fan. Over on KSM I covered the E3 Games Show with the biggest reveals from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. I also produced another couple of editions of Bonus Stage. More stuff coming soon, so make sure you follow me on your social media network of choice to stay in the loop! Twitter FB G+Chris Perkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10178848467568403800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3089898284312812349.post-28596705926629530142014-06-01T14:29:00.002+01:002014-06-01T14:29:27.215+01:00One Day late, Your May Monthly Update

With another month having whizzed by, it's time for your monthly update! The current issue of MyM (issue 26) is still available (in print and digital editions) featuring my reviews of the original Dragon Ball and the latest One Piece volume. Both reviews are pretty short, but you can read my extended thoughts on the former in the AFA review. Speaking of Animation For Adults, that new site has been where most of my attention has been lately, and it's ticking along quite nicely. As well as regular news updates, recent content include reviews of Princess Mononoke, Frozen and the Iron Man anime movie. To keep up with AFA, make sure to follow us on twitter and/or Facebook.
I'm going to try and at least get back to my monthly updates. But as it's been so long I've got quite a few things to share with you. I've continued to appear in MyM, and the latest issue (25) is out now both in all good shops where magazines are sold, and the App store. I did unfortunately miss my first issue- no contribution from me in number 24! However, I did write an article that month, that unfortunately got bumped, so I hope to bring you news of that one shortly.
I'm still contributing to KSM, although not as frequently. New Editions Of Bonus Stage have gone up regularly over on NerdSpan too.

The big news however is I have launched a new site of my own- AFA: Animation For Adults. It's been up since the end of last year, and I started by reposting my old Screen Highway stuff, before gradually building up quite an archive of new content, including news, reviews and articles. Too many to list here so, go check it out for find out more for yourself! It's very early days, but I'm quite pleased with how it's going so far. To make sure you stay in the loop with what I'm up to make sure to follow me on twitter and/or facebook. See you next month (I hope!).
But there's still time for another Chronicles update before I stop writing for the festive season! MyM issue #21 is out now (in shops and app store). You'll find just one review from me this time, Shangri-la part 2. Secondly as alluded to in my previous post, I have started republishing my old Animation Avenue posts on a brand new blog. Currently, consider it in beta- design, format and even name are possibly temporary, but I will tell you more about it in 2014.

I have a few articles that will go up over Christmas week, keep an eye on my twitter for details. Starting with the Bonus Stage Christmas special! A very Merry Christmas to all my readers, and I'll see you next year.Chris Perkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10178848467568403800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3089898284312812349.post-17648631196576800362013-12-06T23:20:00.000+00:002013-12-06T23:20:02.769+00:00Pardon the InterruptionIt has been a while again, hasn't it. Yep I've been thoroughly slacking when it comes to updating the blog, but I have been writing in the meantime. Not as much as I'd like, as thanks to a combination of bad health and a sudden death in the family November was pretty much a write off. But here's a quick run-down of the latest:

Issue 19 and 20 of MyM have been released, featuring more reviews from me. Number 20 (currently on newstands) features my reviews of Guilty Crown, Shangri-La and Sengoku Basara.

I have a new feature on The Void called Downstream highlighting some of the best streaming TV and movies. First up Vampire Prosecutor!

My editing and writing at the site formelly known as Rebel Gaming has continued. We're now known as KillStreak Media. (Not a fan of the new name, but I still enjoy writing for the site all the same!)

It has come to my attention that Screen Highway is no longer online. Keep an eye out for exciting developments in the very near future though!

Well, yes its been rather too long since I updated, isn't it? The good news is that means I've got quite a lot of stuff to fill you in about. Firstly, issue number 18 of MyM magazine is now out in print and in App Store. In this issue I got to write an article I've wanted to write for a long time- a profile of the long running anime series Lupin III. It's a 3 page feature, and thanks to the designer it looks, super spiffy. You'll also find four reviews from me in this ish- Bleach series 11, One Piece volume 3, Rahxephon and Lady Death.

Things have really been picking up over on Rebel Gaming. We've taken on a load of new writers, which has meant I've had more editing to do. We've got some really talented folks there, old and new alike. I don't link to all the news I post there from here, but you can see all my work here.
Just one review from me this time Naruto Shippuden movie 3. I'm hoping to step up my content again in the near future.

What else is new from me? Plenty of stuff on Rebel Gaming, including The 3D platformers That Time Forgot, and the Fighting Games That Time Forgot. , two articles looking at some lesser know games from back in the day. Over on Japan Cinema I took a look at the classic anime flick Akira 25 years on. And on NerdSpan I've posted another two editions of my successful Bonus Stage series, the 21st and 22nd instalments no less!

Meanwhile, back from the dead, my former Rant Gaming article Rogue's Gallery, the 25 top Bad Guys In Gaming is back online, this time over on The Void!
Only slightly, because I was having a nice day so I'm not going to go overboard with the apologies. So there's two weeks worth of stuff to cover today. Firstly let me point out that MyM issue 16 was released on July 11th and features a review from me of One Piece Uncut Box Set 2. There's also plenty of other great stuff (including a Pacific Rim cover and a massive E3 feature) so go get it!

Meanwhile online I've mainly been continuing with my work over at Rebel Gaming. See all my stuff here. Over the past two weeks I have reintroduced my popular feature from Rant gaming This Week In Downloads. It's on a kind of test-run, as TWID is a lot of work, So I will only do it if it is popular again. So far it seems to be doing quite well, but it's early days so we'll have to see.

I also wrote my first article for NerdSpan's movie section: The 10 most wanted Geeky films Still To Come in 2013. It actually started as an article for Rant's short-lived culture section, but it's been almost entirely rewritten and updated.

More stuff coming up this week, including a new article for Japan Cinema!.Chris Perkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10178848467568403800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3089898284312812349.post-33034353028410770302013-06-30T17:33:00.002+01:002013-06-30T17:33:51.047+01:00Not-So-Weekly Wrap up June 30thLast week I was busy working on stuff for print, so there was less stuff than usual online from me. I decided to skip my usual weekly update in favour of covering two weeks worth this week instead. So this week's weekly wrap up, is not so weekly!

I've continued to report on the latest news over on Rebel Gaming, and this has included a look at Microsoft's troubled relationship with indies and a look at eagerly awaited Killer Is Dead release details. I have also reintroduced a feature I ran at the late Rant gaming, looking at each week's UK sales charts. On Nerdspan I put together a E3 flavoured edition of Bonus Stage, while this week saw BS's 19th edition.

This week also saw the first ever review published on this very Blog in the form of King Of Thorn, while over on AUKN I contributed a review of Hellsing Ultimate.

Chris Perkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10178848467568403800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3089898284312812349.post-46278898986745470392013-06-16T21:20:00.000+01:002013-06-16T21:20:16.793+01:00Weekly Wrap-Up June 16th 2013

So this week saw the publication of issue number 15 of the esteemed organ MyM magazine, both in print and in that there app store. I contributed two reviews to this issue: Naruto Shippuden #13 and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood Blu-ray set 4. Go buy it, why don't you? Please?

On the internet side of things this week has mostly been about games, as this week was the annual E3- the biggest industry event in video games. In my capacity as editor and writer for Rebel Gaming, I've been helping to cover the show. Check out a summary of our coverage here, and my great big article taking a look back at the show.

Meanwhile in a return to the film side of things, I also contributed a review of Starship Troopers: Invasion, the direct-to-video animated sequel to the Sci-fi B-movie classic for the marvellous Japan Cinema.Chris Perkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10178848467568403800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3089898284312812349.post-50252863537785922252013-06-09T20:22:00.000+01:002013-06-09T20:22:05.134+01:00Weekly Wrap-Up June 9thWell another week has passed and it's time for another weekly writing wrap-up. Although I've written about a bunch of stuff over the week, some of it won't be online until a later date, so most of the stuff I have for you this week is video game related. (I've also written up news stories for Rebel Gaming, but I don't list them in the round-ups).

I'm going to try and make sure I write up a weekly round-up of my week's work around the interwebs, so you'll know what I've been up to writing wise. So welcome the inaugural weekly wrap-up!

You may know that I have begun writing for the freshly founded games site Rebel Gaming. I'm excited to announce that I have been promoted to an editor on the site. So not only will I be contributing my stuff, I'll also be stepping up to my first editorial role! Exciting stuff.

I've reposted several of my old Rant gaming articles on the new site since it launched:

Every week I also put together the feature Bonus Stage for NerdSpan- a collection of great fan-made stuff from the gamer community. The latest edition went up on Monday. That's all for this week- see you next week or follow me on twitter to stay in the loop!
Well, me hearties issue number fourteen of the good ship MyM is out now in shops and the app store. It be a grand issue, with the pirate-flavoured anime One Piece on the cover. Which explains why I'm talking like this, landlubbers. Yarr! OK... I'll stop now. Not only is One Piece on the cover, but the review of that series happens to be written by your friendly neighbourhood Christor; as in.. me. Just the two reviews from me this time, One Piece and Dragonball Z volume 7, but it's still an awesome issue, so don't miss it! Also, it's one of my favourite reviews I've written, so check it out. For a more detailed article on One Piece from me, check out issue 12!
You may know about the annoyingly sudden decision to shutter Rant Gaming by the corporate types at Rant Media. They made the choice to shutter us, because they did not understand the gaming industry, and they wanted instead to persue only the fields of sports and sexism ( see-or rather don't see- their new site Rant Girls). Anywhoo, to get to the point- I am pleased to announce that I will be a part of the new gaming site Rebel Gaming. This new site is born out of the ashes of Rant, and aims to continue our work over there, only do it much better. It's being started by the former Director of Content over at Rant, and all round top bloke Mr Ryan Johnson, and it will feature a good chunk of the former RG staffers (although, sadly some of the former site's best writers won't be joining us). It only launched this week, and it's very early days but Ryan surely has the technical knowledge and know-how needed to make it a success. I will fill you more about my contributions over the coming weeks but my content so far can be found here. I also highly suggest reading Rebel Gaming's mission statement for the whole story. Exciting times!.Chris Perkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10178848467568403800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3089898284312812349.post-3607039347678287402013-04-21T18:45:00.001+01:002013-04-21T18:45:55.003+01:00MyM issue 13 Has Been Unleashed...Just a quick post to give you your regular notification that MyM magazine issue number 13 is out now. As always you'll find it in all good magazine stockists in the UK, in Barnes and Noble (and possibly specialist retailers) in the US and worldwide via the App Store for iPad. Yay! In this issue you'll find my article on the Japanese monsters and ghosts known as Yokai, and three reviews: for Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 3, and FMA the movie. Have at it! Also, in unrelated news, in the near future expect to find some original content on this very blog!Chris Perkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10178848467568403800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3089898284312812349.post-43265645727668675072013-04-15T19:35:00.000+01:002013-04-15T19:35:49.043+01:00Lists, Lists and lastly, lists. So, exactly what have I've been up to since I last updated? Writing wise, there's a fair bit of stuff that I haven't covered here yet so I figured I should fill you in. MyM issue 13 is incoming, but I'll save that for a future post. I'm still working on reposting the articles published on Rant Gaming that can be updated (when needed) and republished, so a few of them have appeared on NerdSpan.
